Tuks athletes won three of Team SA’s six medals at the London Summer Games: one gold (Matthew Brittain, Lawrence Ndlovu, John Smith and James Thompson in the Men’s Lightweight Four), one silver (Caster Semenya in the 800 m women) and one bronze (Bridgitte Hartley; K1 women 500 m).

Semenya’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as she became the first African woman to win an Olympic medal for South Africa.

“We are humbled by our athletes’ success. They made us very, very proud,” said TuksSport Director, Kobus van der Walt. “Their achievements are telling testimony that TuksSport is on the right track in our declared mission to be the best in everything we do. I would like to congratulate all our medal winners and their coaches for their success in London. We also congratulate our other TuksSport athletes who did not win medals, notably LJ van Zyl and Oscar Pistorius, who both took part in the final of the 4x400 m men’s relay event.”

The University can now lay claim to being the foremost breeding ground of champions.
