TIP Initiatives

TIP Initiatives

While pursuing its main objectives, the Tshwane Insulin Project (TIP) is engaging in various initiatives to address the challenges that have been identified by the project team. The project team recognises that the improvement of diabetes management and care for people living with diabetes requires a multidimensional intervention.

Patient Education and Empowerment:

Diabetes & Hypertension trainings for health professionals:

TIP has joined the Tshwane District efforts on training of health professionals. The experts from the project team facilitate training workshops and deliver lectures that are primary care-oriented and aligned to the national diabetes and hypertension management guidelines.

TIP Community Health Workers Initiative:

Community Health Workers are a recent addition to the South African health system. Their basic function is to improve the community’s access to primary healthcare by performing specific roles including linking the community with resources and services, spreading health information, raising awareness about disease and conducting health promotion activities. The Tshwane Insulin Project (TIP) is partnering with the University Of Pretoria Department Of Family Medicine to test an intervention to explore the role of community health workers in the management of Non-Communicable Diseases.

4Bs and 4Cs Programme:

Through this initiative, the Tshwane Insulin Project (TIP) is promoting optimal control for people with Type 2 diabetes at primary health care level.

4Bs stand for:

  • Blood glucose,
  • Blood pressure,
  • Blood cholesterol,
  • Breathe air, do not smoke.

4Cs stand for:

  • Check eye,
  • Check mouth,
  • Check kidneys,
  • Check feet.
