Academia from Unisa, UJ, US, NWU, UFS, Rhodes University and UP attended the workshop, with UCT, UKZN, NMMU, Monash and Wits not being able to attend but also participating in the project. SATEA embarked on a collaborative effort among most of the universities participating in a research project not yet done in South Africa – creating a collaborative research publication named Tax Stories.
Currently nine seminal tax court cases are researched and each court case forms the basis of an article to be published in a special edition of the Southern African Business Review. Not only is the purpose of the special edition to provide a platform for accredited output to the researchers but also to provide an Open Educational Resource (OER) for postgraduate students in the field of taxation.
This special edition will be accessible to all students across South Africa, regardless at which university they are studying. Through this initiative, the taxation researchers and educators aim to provide a benchmark among the various universities to ensure that all the students are on par and have access to a variety of research and teaching material. This burden would have been too much for a single university, but by collaborating resources, the academia are enriched by the combined learning and peer review of each other’s work, while students are presented with an exceptional learning aid.
