UP final year audiology students provide early detection and prevention of hearing loss services in schools

UP fourth year audiology students continue with efforts of early identification and prevention of hearing loss through school-based hearing screening of learners in Grade R, 1, 2, and 3 at primary schools in Gauteng. As a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Deafness and Hearing Loss, the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the University of Pretoria has partnered with various stakeholders including the National Department of Basic Education and the hearX Group to ensure hearing screening of learners in selected primary schools. The hearing screening includes promotion and prevention whereby learners are taught about safe ear and hearing practices to prevent hearing loss as according to the 2022 WHO World Hearing Day theme.
