The 3rd of March 2022 was World Hearing Day with a theme of “To hear for life, listen with care.”The emphasis is on safe listening practices to prevent avoidable hearing loss and to maintain good hearing for the whole of life.
In support of this year's event the research group at the WHO Collaborating Centre, University of Pretoria, planned several events to emphasize the need for prevention and for early detection of changes in hearing. A screening day in partnership with the hearX foundation was conducted at Nokuphila Primary School in Midrand where two doctoral students Caitlin Frisby and Megan Knoetze represented the University of Pretoria's Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
In a separate event with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) where Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, attended a team provided hearing screening at Westbury Primary School in Johannesburg for all grade 1 to 3 learners. A doctoral student in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, Bopane Mothemela, was interviewed by the Department of Basic Education on the importance of early detection of hearing loss in children.
