What we do know is that about 1 in every 1, 000 individuals stutter, that there are many causes for stuttering and different approaches are used in the management of stuttering. The King’s Speech has done a great deal to raise awareness with regard to stuttering and the intense emotions a person who stutters experiences. Because of the complexity of stuttering one needs to address the individual holistically. Stuttering therapy requires time and there are no “quick fixes’, furthermore should it be offered by a registered speech-language therapist who will individualize the therapy according to the client’s own needs. Self help groups run in some of the big centers such as Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban.

The Stuttering Foundation of America states with reference to famous persons who stuttered that “stuttering didn’t stop them…. so it needn’t stop you".
