John Patrick Tutu obtained his primary education at Ermelo. He then attended Adams College in KwaZulu Natal, where he qualified as a higher primary school teacher in 1930. Tutu then taught at several schools, including Fairleigh Government High School in Newcastle, KwaZulu Natal, where he taught music. Tutu was well known as a choir conductor. On 4 October 1957, he conducted the White City Choristers at the Johannesburg ‘Bantu Music Festival’, where they won the open section for sacred music.
