OLIVIER, Gerrit Cornelius 

 

b. 6 November 1945, Villiers

 

Gerrit Olivier studied music at the University of Pretoria. An overseas scholarship from the British Council allowed him to study as a répétiteur and conductor at the London Opera Centre in 1976-77. At the same time he received tuition in piano accompaniment from Geoffrey Parsons, and performed at Parsons' master classes in the South Bank Summer Music Festival in London. 

 

Olivier subsequently appeared as accompanist and répétiteur for the Regional Councils for the Performing Arts of Natal and the Free State and for numerous prominent singers and choirs. He is also active in the field of church music and has been organist in various parishes of the Dutch Reformed Church for more than 40 years. At present he is organist for the Waterkloof parish in Pretoria. Olivier serves on the executive committee of the South African Church Organists' Association (SAKOV). 

 

Furthermore he was a member of the Interdenominational Commission responsible for revising the Afrikaans Psalm Book and the Afrikaans Hymnal, which were published in 2002.  Apart from contributing ten new melodies, he also harmonized more than 40 psalms and hymns. Gerrit Olivier is the author of several articles on church music and South African Art Music.
