NKOSI, Wilfred Willard 

 

b. 10 April 1923, Witrivier

d. 18 December 1965, Witbank

 

Wilfred Willard Nkosi came from a musical family (his father, for example, is known to have played the accordeon). He was educated at White River Bantu School, then at Pax Training College, where he also ran a boys’ choir. He later obtained a National Senior Certificate through private study. In 1946, Nkosi passed his teacher’s diploma. In 1947, he began teaching in Barberton. He was later transferred to Witbank, where he spent the rest of his teaching career. He died in December 1965 from liver cancer. As a musician, Nkosi was mostly self-taught, and himself studied various texbooks on composition. His oevure comprises primarily songs for school choirs.
