Any research that falls within the definition of ‘health research’ is subject to the National Health Act and must receive prior ethics approval at the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee. See the definition of what constitutes ‘health research’ in the Research Compliance Regulation and the definition on the Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee website.

Practically, this means that the criteria for research projects which must obtain approval from the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee are:

▪    All qualitative and quantitative research projects conducted in the Faculty of Health Sciences; and

▪    All qualitative and quantitative research related to the health of humans regardless of the faculty(ies) in which the research project will be conducted.

All research projects (undergraduate, postgraduate, or studies by personnel) in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (NAS) involving human subject participants, regulated biohazardous chemicals, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), internal or external data, and animal research will require the review of the project proposal and additional documentation by an appropriate University Research Ethics Committee. Research projects that do not deal with the above-mentioned subject matters or must adhere to specific discipline-driven ethical requirements can be submitted for approval to the NAS departmental research committee for final approval
