Ms Yi Shi
Ph.D Student:  Fordham University, USA
Yi Shi, originally from China, is currently a Ph.D student studying Psychology at Fordham University in the United States.  As Fordham University and Tuks have a close collaboration on research, Yi got a summer fellowship from Fordham to come to Tuks to carry out a collaborated research study under the supervision of Prof David Maree and Ms Clare Schür. The study is on morality and how moral self affects people's pro-social behaviour such as donation to charity and volunteer work.  Yi has collected over 100 data sheets at Tuks among Psychology first, second, third year and honours students.  This study is also part of her masters thesis and she will do a cross-cultural comparison of university students in both South Africa and the United States.  The findings should show us how culture, as well as moral identity plays a role in people's moral decisions and should further indicate what we could do to best promote responsible citizens and a better society.

Prof Combort Asanbe
Associate Professor:  College of Staten Island, The City University of New York
PhD, Tennessee State University, MA, Austin Peay State University
Med, Austin Peay State University, BA, University of Ilorin (Nigeria)

Research @ UP:  The bulk of my scholarly work has focused on children at risk due to parental drug addiction, poverty, other environmental factors, and more recently, parental HIV/AIDS infection.  I have attempted to more precisely identify these threats and quantify the risks that these factors pose to the psychological health of children.  At UP, I worked with colleagues from August 2012 to July 2013 on the following two projects:

Lefika OVC Research Project, Hammanskraal:  This project focused on orphans and vulnerable children in Hammanskraal. The majority of the children became orphans due to HIV/AIDS.  The major objective of the study is to assess the psychological functioning and coping resources of the children who participate in Lefika OVC-NGO activities, with the goal of identifying the impact of NGO services on the mental health of this population.  This is a three-year follow-up project.  The first phase of data collection was completed in July 2013. The research team consists of Dr. Comfort B. Asanbe (PI) [email protected], and the following ccollaborators: Ms. Anne Moleko, Dr. Maretha Visser, Ms. Angela Thomas, and Mrs Catherine Makwakwa (Director, Lefika OVC).  For further inquiry in South Africa, please contact Anne at [email protected].

UP-Mamelodi Itsoseng Clinic Research Project:  The Itsoseng Clinic is located in Mamelodi. The clinic provides free counseling services to adults and children from low-income families, and there is usually a large number on the waiting-list. UP graduate students (interns) who are under supervision, provide counseling services, and volunteers from surrounding areas provide creative activities – music, arts and crafts, dance, and acting,– to the children who are on the waiting list (for counseling). The goal of the study is to gather preliminary data on the impact, if any, of the creative activities on the psychological functioning of the children who are on the waiting list, and if extending such activities can improve the mental health of those needing services. Data collection is on-going.  Dr. Linda Blokland, the director of the clinic, is a collaborator on the project.  For further inquiry in South Africa, please contact Linda at [email protected].
