2026 Call for Applications - UP Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme:

 

The University of Pretoria (UP) invites its academic researchers to apply for postdoctoral fellowships, which will support research in areas aligned with the faculty, institute, and university’s priorities.

 

The categories of fellowships include:

 

UP PhD Postdoctoral Fellowships for UP doctoral graduates who have fulfilled all the requirements for the PhD degree within one year at the time of application. One-year fellowship with no possibility for renewal.

 

UP Postdoctoral Fellowships for recent doctoral graduates from UP or any other university. Two years, renewal subject to satisfactory progress.

 

UP Co-funded Postdoctoral Fellowships for recent doctoral graduates from UP or any other university. Two years, renewal subject to satisfactory progress.

 

VALUE

R250 000 per year for UP PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships

R125 000 per year for the UP Co-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship (The supervisor must contribute at least R125 000 per year for two years)

2025 Postdoctoral Fellowship Call for Applications

 

2-YEAR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING AND STATISTICAL METHODS,

FACULTY OF ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (EMS), UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA.

 

Summary of the project:

We are embarking on examining publicly available government documents focusing on climate. This needs the use of NLP tools, such as for example BERT and GPT, to extract relevant words/phrases of interest; and thereafter to examine the evolution/frequency of extracted data over time.

 

The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team, reporting to Prof Sonali Das. During the tenure, the successful candidate will be required to co-author research, mentor students, present workshops, and take ownership of the research project.

 

Requirements

  • PhD in statistics, data science, computer science, computational linguistics, AI, or a related field
  • Experience in natural language processing and/or machine learning (e.g., as evidenced through publications, conference presentations)
  • Experience and knowledge in document analysis
  • Knowledge of transformer models (e.g., BERT, GPT)
  • Demonstrated experience in statistical methods (e.g., evidenced through publications) such as time series, functional data, and nonparametric
  • Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Proficiency with R, Quarto, or similar tools
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

 

Value: R250 000 per year, for two years, renewal for the second year is subject to the submission of a satisfactory annual progress report.
