Programme information

A student for the PhD degree must submit a thesis as well as an academic article(s) dealing with a topic in the field of study.

Also refer to G Regulations G.42 to G.54.

Admission requirements

  • A master’s degree in Town and Regional planning; or an applicable master's degree deemed acceptable by the departmental Postgraduate Committee.
  • The departmental Postgraduate Committee reserves the right to decide if the applicant is suitable for postgraduate studies based on the academic transcript and required application documentation. The Department has limited supervisory capacity and only accepts candidates for whom it is able to provide supervision. The applicant must determine the research focus area and a potential supervisor and confirm the potential supervisor’s availability (consult departmental website for research focus areas, potential supervisors, as well as required application documentation and procedures).
  • An applicant may be requested by the departmental Postgraduate Committee to complete a research methodology course prior to commencing studies.

Additional requirements

A student must have successfully completed a relevant module in research methodology in order for his/her study proposal to be approved.

Examinations and pass requirements

An oral and/or written doctoral examination is required dealing with the contents of the thesis as well as the subject matter of the discipline on which it is based.
