Postgraduate Degrees

Bachelor of Music (Hons)

One year (minimum). The course offers specialisation in: Musicology, Music Education, Performing Arts (jazz, classical or African) and Music Technology. Applicants must have a three-year BA Mus or BMus degree.
 

Bachelor of Music (Hons) Music Communication

This course is offered annually. Applicants are selected every year for this part-time one-year course, which includes three compulsory block sessions per year.

Master of Music (MMus) (Research)

One year (minimum). This course offers specialisation in Didactics of Piano, Musicology or Music Education. The student submits a thesis. Applicants must already have a four-year BMus degree, or a BMus (Hons).
 

Master of Music (MMus) (Composition)

One year (minimum). The student submits a portfolio of compositions and a dissertation. Applicants must already have a four-year BMus degree.
 

Master of Music (MMus) (Performing Arts)

One year (minimum). The student performs two recitals of 150 minutes in total (jazz, classical or African), and writes a dissertation. Applicants must already have a four-year BMus degree. Admission to this degree is by audition.
 

Master of Music (MMus) (Music Therapy)

A two-year programme of intensive, full-time training, with 1000 hours of supervised clinical internship. This is the only training in music therapy professionally validated by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Applicants must have completed a four-year bachelor's degree in Music or an allied field.

Master of Music (MMus) (Music Technology)

A two-year programme aimed at producing a substantial thesis in the domain. The topics chosen would range from programming, recording practice, acoustics, and any other topic that crosses the disciplines of technology and musical arts. Candidates must have completed a four-year bachelor of Music degree of which a music technology-related elective is imperative. 

Doctor of Music (DMus) (Research)

The student submits an original thesis.
 

Doctor of Music (DMus) (Performing Arts)

The student performs threerecitals of 75 minutes each (225 minutes in total) (jazz, classical or African), and submits a dissertation. Admission to this degree is by audition.
 

Doctor of Music (DMus) (Composition)

The student submits a portfolio of original compositions and a dissertation.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Music

The student submits an original thesis.
