Tuks's Sigz Ntuli has undoubtedly established himself as one of South Africa's top hockey coaches, but the one thing he will never do is to ever rest on his laurels.
For him, the challenge will always be to get the teams he coaches to keep on pushing the boundaries. He firmly believes if you're aiming for something, even if you don't achieve it, you'll still be somewhere better than where you started.
This attitude has led to him helping the KZN Raiders win the provincial tournament twice in succession and the Dragons to win the PHL. He also steered the Northerns under-21 side to victory.
His success has not gone unrewarded. Last year Ntuli was appointed as assistant coach to the national men's team. He is now also coaching the South African men's under-21 side.
Still, he remains as humble as the first day he started coaching.
"To get to coach the game I 'really, really' love at the highest level is a massive honour. The aim is to make everyone who has a vested interest in South African hockey proud through our efforts and commitment. If we do, the results will hopefully, then take care of itself."
As the national under-21 coach Ntuli's first aim is to ensure the team qualifies for next year's World Cup Tournament.
"From a personal perspective, I would like to instil a competitive mindset. Luckily I have a good history with all the 'boys' as at least 90% of them started their international career with me as their national coach at an under-16 level. It is kinda like a journey that
has gone a full circle with me coaching them now again."
"My coaching philosophy is to take control of any game right from the start. It boils down to every player having to be on top of their game. The aim is always to try and play an expansive brand of hockey. Our play from set-pieces needs to be a threat to whoever we are facing."
The South African under-21 squad is having a training camp this week at Tuks.
Ntuli's other primary goal this season is to help the Tuks' men's side retain the Varsity-title they won in 2018.
