MEN
Tuks 1 vs Tut 1, Friday 08 June, 18H00
David Viney, the TuksHockey Men's 1 Coach, said before the game "we are using the match as preparation for USSA, so the most important thing is the performance. We will be trying different combinations, and trying to get the many young players game time before USSA. We are not concentrating on results, just key performance areas and making sure we do well.”
The match was played with the new yellow FIH regulation Kookaburra Elite Ball which is specially made for use on blue Astro turf. The yellow ball contrasts well against the blue turf and is easier to see.
Tuks 1 opened the scoreboard with a field goal fairly early into the first half, while goal two came in the 17th minute. A lapse in concentration saw the Tuks defenders give a penalty stroke away and Tut capitalised on the opportunity and brought the score to 2 – 1 with 4 minutes to go in the first half.
After the break, the Tuks 1 men upped the tempo and scored three quick goals, extending their lead to 5 – 1 with 25 minutes to go. Feeling confident with the 4 goal lead, Tuks 1 lost concentration and conceded 2 goals in 2 minutes. Tut was back in the game with only 2 goals behind at 5 – 3 and used the momentum gained to score a 4th goal with 12 minutes remaining on the clock. The score remained 5 – 4 to Tuks 1. Chris Cloete scored a hatrick.
The 9 goal match was very entertaining and at times nerve-wracking for the very cold spectators who braved the low temperatures and biting wind to support their teams.
