For the first time in recent history TuksHockey only entered 3 teams into the tournament; Tuks 1 Ladies, Tuks 1 Men and Tuks 2 Men. Due to the limited number of entrants that UCT could accommodate, Tuks 2 Ladies missed out on participating this year. Tuks 1 Men and Ladies would participate in the A section and Tuks 2 Men played in the B section.
The Tuks 1 Men were significantly weakened by the loss of 5 key players (Ross Gonsalves, Rene de la Peyre, Matthew Guise-Brown, Grant Glutz and Keagan Robinson) who were selected for the World Student Games team which participated in Russia during the same time as the USSA tournament.
Tuks 1 Ladies were missing 2 players (Lilian du Plessis and Phumelela Mbande), who were away with the South African Ladies National team, during their tournament preparatiom. Both players joined the team in Cape Town after their National duty.
Even with the absence of key playes preparations for the tournament however still continued with the players that would be available to play and all teams felt adequately prepared and ready to compete at the tournament.
The players along with the coaching and management team departed for Cape Town on June 30 2013, the tournament would take place from 01 – 06 July 2013.
Competition was tight in all the sections with games being decided in the final minutes of the games. The tournament turned out to be one of very mixed results for the Tuks teams with Tuks 2 Men starting strongly but then being affected by injuries to players, the Tuks 1 Men also struggled due to the personnel they were missing whilst the Ladies got stronger as the week progressed and went on to play in the final.
The Tuks 2 Men finished in 4th position, the Tuks 1 Men unfortunately finished in 8th. The Tuks 1 Ladies did us all proud winning the USSA Ladies A Section, this has not been done since 2005! Big congratulations must go out to the players and coaching staff for this great achievement.
Final results:
Tuks 2 Men: 4th Position
Tuks 1 Men: 8th Position
Tuks 1 Ladies: 1st PositionCopyright © University of Pretoria 2025. All rights reserved.
