Erasmus+ Co-Funded Grants for CBHE

Prof Ericka L'Abbé, Director of FARC, has acted as the coordinator of two Erasmus+ co-funded grant projects for Capacity Building in Higher Education.

Bakeng se Afrika (2019 - 2023)

The Bakeng se Afrika project developed the first digital skeletal repository in Southern Africa. Over 3 500 micro-XCT scans of skeletal elements were curated to build the repository, with additional scans being added as research continues.

Grant value: € 999 850.00

Collaborators: South Africa (University of Pretoria, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Stellenbosch University, South African Nuclear Energy Corporation); Belgium (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven); Portugal (Universidade de Coimbra); France (Université de Bordeaux, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique).

   

Dirisana+ (2021 - 2024)

The Dirisana+ project aims to improve health sciences education in southern Africa through the development of teaching and learning resources and revised curricula.

Grant value: € 1 000 000.00

Collaborators: South Africa (University of Pretoria, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, University of the Witwatersrand); Namibia (University of Namibia, Welwitchia Health Sciences Training Centre); Finland (University of Turku); the Netherlands (Maastricht University); Ireland (University College Dublin).

Archaeological Rescue Operations

Members of FARC are assisting in recovery archaeology projects for the exhumation, analysis, and reburial of human remains.
 

Koffiefontein Diamond Mine (2022 - present)

In collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand and G&A Heritage, recovery excavations at the Koffiefontein Diamond Mine are underway to exhume and relocate late 19th Century graves that were uncovered during mining operations.
