UP’s Dr. Tlotleng Achieves Y2 NRF Rating: A Milestone in Occupational Health Research

Posted on September 16, 2024

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria celebrates Dr. Nonhlanhla Tlotleng's achievement of a Y2 NRF rating, a recognition for her work in occupational health, a specialised field within public health. Focusing on workplace hazards, occupational cancers, and their effects on human health, Dr. Tlotleng's research plays an important role in addressing global health challenges.

Dr. Tlotleng expressed her excitement about the recognition: “Getting this first NRF rating has always been one of my goals. Being recognised by peers both locally and internationally shows the impact of my work and my competency as a researcher. This milestone strengthens my position as an emerging independent researcher, and I hope to reach a C-rating in the next few years.”

Her work is centered on occupational health risk factors, with a particular emphasis on exposures linked to occupational cancers and hazards in the workplace. "Occupation is a crucial aspect of life, contributing to the global burden of disease. My research aims to highlight how occupational exposures are directly linked to health outcomes," she explained.

On how she plans to utilise her new Y2 status, Dr. Tlotleng said, “This rating will significantly enhance my ability to apply for research grants and strengthen my academic profile. It also highlights my dedication to improving occupational health research.”

Reflecting on the process of obtaining the Y2 rating, Dr. Tlotleng shared, “At the start of 2023, I set my sights on the Y-rating, five years after completing my PhD. I carefully selected five of my publications that had a high impact, co-authored with established researchers. Collaborating with C and B-rated researchers significantly boosted my chances. Additionally, I demonstrated my capacity for student supervision and provided a clear vision of my future research contributions.” She added that having a mentor with prior rating experience was key to her success.

Dr. Tlotleng views the Y2 rating as validation of her ability to grow as an independent researcher. “This rating affirms that I am ready to guide upcoming researchers and contribute to advancing knowledge in my field. It’s an important step for my career, allowing me to meet university requirements for promotions and academic growth,” she remarked.

Offering advice to young researchers, Dr. Tlotleng emphasized the importance of early preparation: “Start planning for your rating early. Always aim to collaborate and co-author with established researchers. It might seem impossible at times, but as Nelson Mandela said, ‘It always seems impossible until it is done.”

Dr. Tlotleng’s achievement highlights her commitment to occupational health research and her determination to address the risks and challenges faced by workers globally. Her work serves as an inspiration to the next generation of researchers striving to make meaningful contributions to public health.
