UP’s Prof. Nyakudya earns C2 NRF rating for Research in Phytomedicine

Posted on September 11, 2024

Professor Trevor Nyakudya, an associate professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Pretoria, has been awarded the prestigious C2 rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF). Prof. Nyakudya holds several degrees, including a BSc, BScHons, MSc Medicine, and a PhD in Medical Physiology from Wits University, as well as postgraduate diploma and MSc qualifications in Health Science Education. Specialising in medical physiology, Prof. Nyakudya focuses on pre-clinical biomedical research, where he investigates the therapeutic potential of phytomedicines in the strategic management of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and metabolic dysfunction. His research explores the developmental origins of health and disease using animal models, to investigate how phytomedicines, particularly when administered during critical periods of developmental plasticity, can improve health outcomes later on in adulthood.

“I am honoured and grateful for this recognition as it is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of my postgraduate students, collaborators, and everyone involved in our research,” said Prof. Nyakudya.

Regarding his research approach, Prof. Nyakudya explained, “My work aims to validate indigenous knowledge systems, promoting the sustainable use of natural plant products in medicine and our under-served rural communities.” His efforts are focused on advancing knowledge in the management of diseases using alternative and complementary approaches. Through his mentorship, he has successfully supervised numerous BScHons, MSc and PhD students, with many continuing to make significant strides in the field.

Achieving a C2 rating, Prof. Nyakudya recognises the importance of leveraging this status to expand his research impact. “As a C2-rated researcher, I plan to continue publishing high-quality research, fostering innovation, and building global partnerships to address complex challenges associated with non-communicable diseases,” he stated.

Prof. Nyakudya acknowledges the support of his mentors, particularly Prof. Joubert and Prof Erlwanger, for guiding him through the rigorous rating process. He also highlighted the role of the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Health Sciences in supporting his work, ensuring he could present his research effectively.

Moving forward, Prof. Nyakudya is dedicated to fostering collaboration and addressing Africa’s pressing healthcare challenges. He envisions a future where research into indigenous knowledge systems alleviates public health burdens, particularly metabolic disorders. “My contribution to this future is through my active engagement in research, creating knowledge that will make a difference both locally and globally,” he added.

Prof. Nyakudya’s future research will continue aligning with South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 3, focused on ensuring good health and well-being. His work on verifying the pharmacological aspects of plant-based medicines has the potential to revolutionise human disease management and contribute to the discovery of new plant-based drugs.
