The department was invited to join the Cancer and Acute Leukemia Group B (GALGB) (USA) international cancer cooperative group in 1966 with patients from all nationalities being entered onto clinical trials from as early as 1968. This led to the Department of Medical Oncology being invited to join the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group in the USA. . ECOG includes internationally renowned institutions such as the Johns Hopkins, Stanford University, the Fax Chase Cancer Centre and the Mayo clinic, to name a few.
The department remains the only Independent Department of Medical Oncology in South Africa to date.
