In this course we will be concerned with what is commonly termed the poverty-environment relationship in Africa. This refers primarily to the use of environmental resources by rural households. An understanding of this relationship is of growing importance due to the extent of rural poverty, rising concerns about the state of natural resources and because of the role that rural households play in determining the state of these resources.
