Incorporating the skills of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), such as coding and robotics, has strengthened the foundation of education. Contextualising these subjects within South Africa’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity is challenging, as is overcoming teachers’ apprehension about entering this new realm.
Historically, education has centered around the three fundamental Rs: Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic. Now, a new element has been added to the mix: Robotics, which is being introduced to children at increasingly younger ages.
Research shows that coding and robotics can help children solve problems faster, stimulate their imagination and even enhance language skills. But who will guide these young learners on their new educational journey?
They are HERE! The JVK 300 module, Teaching and Learning Coding and Robotics in the Foundation Phase, in the Department of Early Childhood Education has commenced.
JVK 300 aspires to transform education by equipping teachers with the tools and knowledge to seamlessly integrate coding and robotics into their classroom. The goal is to cultivate digitally literate and innovative young minds, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
The module will also explore the integration of coding and robotics with South Africa's diverse languages, mathematics, and life skills. By doing so, it aims to provide a seamless understanding of how these technologies can support and enhance learning across various subjects.
