The Literacy Practice modules in ECE breaking boundaries with the TPACK model

Posted on August 04, 2021

In 2019 a Literacy Practices (JGL) project commenced where Dr Joyce West and Dr Makwalete Malatji equipped the second-year ECE students with the knowledge and skills to design their own literacy websites. The project integrated various types of knowledge and technical skills and provided students with an authentic learning experience. In 2020 the project grew with the ECE department taking hands with EduON, a provider of Google. EduON provided the ECE students with a hands-on, step-by-step guide and also presented a Master class on campus. In August 2020, Dr West presented their study at the Flexible Futures conference. Here is a link to a recording of the presentation.

For more information on the benefits of using website design as pedagogy and the TPACK model within teacher education, read the paper titled Technology integration in higher education: Website design as pedagogy promote quality teaching and learning, published in the Electronic Journal of e-Learning (EJEL), an internationally accredited journal.

As all good teachers’ do, Dr West also created her own Literacy website as and example. Here is a link to her website.

Examples of some of the students’ websites are as follows:

Afrikaans website examples

Leer saam speel saam

Gletterdelamas

English website examples

Brain trainers
