Nominated candidates for Council Election

We are now in the voting phase, which will run from Monday, 19 May 2025 to Friday, 6 June 2025. Below is the list of candidates who have been duly nominated for consideration. Members of the Convocation are encouraged to participate in this important process. Duly nominated candidate for Position 1 - nominee with expertise as a qualified auditor/chartered accountant

Mr Frans Albert Krause

Mr Frans Krause has been a Chartered Accountant (SA) since 1973, a member of SAICA and of the then Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board since 1974. He earned an MCom in Taxation from the University of Pretoria (UP) in 2016 and subsequently lectured at UP and Akademia. Mr Krause spent 20 years as a partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), later joining Telkom in 2002 as Executive: Tax Services, where he contributed to its JSE and NYSE listings. In April 2024 he was elected as a pensioner trustee on the Telkom Retirement Fund where he currently serves on the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee.

Ms Kagiso Rhona Mavuka

Ms Kagiso Mavuka holds a BCom Accounting (2009) and BCom Honours (2011) from the University of Johannesburg, an MCom in Taxation (2018) and Postgraduate Advanced Taxation (2017) from the University of Pretoria, and an Executive Development Programme from Duke Corporate Education (2023). An accomplished chartered accountant, Ms Mavuka is currently serving as Senior Audit Manager at KPMG where she leads audits for major clients including Sasol Gas (Pty) Ltd and Exxaro Resources Limited. She also serves as Treasurer of the Restorative Justice Centre and as a SAICA assessor. Ms Mavuka has over a decade of experience in financial oversight, corporate governance and strategic leadership.

Ms Eunivicia Matlhogonolo Mogapi

Ms Matlhogonolo Mogapi holds an MBA from GIBS University of Pretoria (2020) and, following the completion of her BAccSci at Witwatersrand University (2008), she qualified as a Chartered Accountant (SA) in 2013. Ms Mogapi is currently the Managing Director of Bagaka Group, an IRBA-registered audit and advisory firm which she founded in 2014. She has over a decade of leadership in audit, risk, and advisory services. She is a member of the IRBA Committee for Auditing Standards, chairs a task group on Audit Quality Management, and sits on various boards including the South African Guide Dogs Association. Her published research and community initiatives underscore her dedication to excellence.

Ms Carol Margaret Read

Ms Carol Read is the interim CEO of the READ Educational Trust, South Africa’s largest literacy organisation, where she has led a major restructuring and introduced new fundraising strategies. She qualified as a Chartered Accountant (South Africa) in 1981 after earning a BCom Honours in Accounting (1980) and a BCom (1979) from the University of Pretoria. She is a PRINCE II practitioner and has completed the GIBS-KPMG partner development programme. She was the first female partner at KPMG Africa (1989) and the first woman on its main board (1997), holding senior roles in audit, education, and strategy before retiring in 2016.

Duly nominated candidate for Position 2 - nominee with expertise in finance and investment management

Mr Rendani Maliage

Mr Rendani Maliage holds an MBA from Nagoya University of Commerce and Business, Japan (2019), a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pretoria, as well as certification in Entrepreneurial Finance, Financial Modeling and Valuation Analysis, and Lean Six Sigma. He is an Investment Associate at the National Empowerment Fund, leading funding initiatives supporting South Africa’s industrial policies. His past roles include Strategy Analyst at Total Energies and key positions at BASF SA, Air Liquide, and Nampak Glass. He won the ABE Startup Competition in Tokyo (2018) and received the ABE Scholarship (2019). His expertise spans project finance, risk management, and strategic investments in energy and manufacturing.

Dr Robert van Eyden

Dr Robert van Eyden holds a Doctor of Commerce (1994), MCom Cum Laude (1991), BCom Hons (1988), and BCom (1987) from the University of Pretoria (UP). He is currently the CEO of Scope Markets South Africa, having held key roles in leading financial institutions. From 1989 to 1995 he served as Associate Professor at UP. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Markets, a certified stockbroker and a director at the SA Institute of Financial Markets. The author of three books and numerous academic papers, Dr van Eyden is recognized for pioneering research in neural networks and for delivering award-winning investment performance.

Duly nominated candidate for Position 3 – nominee with expertise in information technology

Mr Daniel Matthys Behr

Mr Daniel Behr holds a BSc (1982), BSc (Hons) (1984) and MSc in Computer Science (1992) from the University of Pretoria (UP). He is currently the director of RHE Live, an IT consulting firm. He lectured at UP from 1984 to 1993 and worked as a visiting scientist at IBM’s European Networking Centre in Germany from 1993 to 1995. Mr Behr co-founded the IT software development company EPI-USE Systems and formed part of the management team, serving in key roles locally and internationally until his retirement in 2021. He is a patent holder, innovation award recipient, and has served on multiple university advisory boards.

Mrs Zinzile Luthuli

Mrs Zinzile Luthuli holds the following qualifications: University of Pretoria (UP) GIBS MBA (2022); GIBS Postgraduate diploma in General Management (2021), GIBS International Executive Development Programme in Development Finance (2025), and UP BSc (2007). She is the Chief Information Officer at WBoA Financial Services, leading technology, cybersecurity, and marketing strategies. She also serves as Vice President of the UP Convocation Advisory Board and Chair of the Direct Marketing Association of SA. As Founder of Z Koncepts, she provides management consulting services and digital transformation solutions. She has held senior roles at Barloworld Equipment, AA, Genric Insurance and Unilever.

A recommendation from amongst those duly nominated will be made by the Members’ Committee and Council will thereafter appoint three members. 

The elected members will serve on the Council in their personal capacity and not as representatives of any interest group.

The announcement of the three members of the Convocation who will serve on the Council will be made on Monday, 30 June 2025.

 


*What is the Convocation?

The Convocation is a legally constituted body which includes approximately 300 000 alumni of the University as its largest constituency. Members of the University’s executive, deans of faculties, all current permanent academic staff members, professors emeriti and other retired academic employees also form part of the Convocation. As a key stakeholder group, the Convocation has a vested interest in the stature and success of the University. The University’s Convocation structures are regulated by the provisions of the UP Statute (2018) and the Institutional Rules of the University.
