FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

  1. Who forms the Convocation?

The Convocation of the University of Pretoria consists of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, the Vice-Principals, the Executive Directors, the Registrar, the Deans of faculties, the permanent academic employees of the University, professors emeriti, other retired academic employees and such other persons as the Council may determine; as well as all other persons who have obtained a qualification, as approved by Senate and Council, from the University.

 

 

2.       Will the elected President of the Convocation automatically become a member of Council?

The elected President of the Convocation will only become a member of Council once a vacancy arises in the category of Convocation members currently serving on the Council of the University.

 

3.       What is the term of office for the President of the Convocation?

The President of the Convocation is elected for a period of five (5) years.

 

4.       Who qualifies to vote?

Only a person whose name appears on the members’ list at the time of his or her claiming a right to vote as a member of the Convocation is entitled to vote.

 

5.       What happens to members of the Convocation who have not updated their details?

It is the responsibility of members of the Convocation to ensure that their details are updated on the University’s system. The Alumni Office also ran several campaigns this year encouraging Alumni to update their details. The final deadline for updating details was 1 October 2019. Those who have not updated their details before the deadline will not be able to vote in this election.

 

6.       Will I be able to vote via paper ballot?

No provision has been made for paper ballots as this election will be conducted by means of an electronic voting process only. This detail was included in the call for nominations.

 

7.       What do I do if I have no internet access or I have enquiries related to the voting process?

Convocation members who do not have internet access will be able to vote at a voting booth in the Marketing Services Building on the Hatfield Campus. Please contact the help desk at 012 420 6848 or email [email protected] to make an appointment. The help desk will also assist with any enquiries related to the voting process.

Only members of the Convocation of the University of Pretoria may participate in the election process.

 

8.       How many candidates have been duly nominated and comply with the applicable criteria for election as President of the Convocation?

A total of seven (7) candidates were duly nominated and comply with the applicable criteria for election as President of the Convocation.

 

9.       How many votes does each voter have?

Each voter may only cast one (1) vote.

 

10.     What is the deadline for casting votes?

Voting closes at 16:00 on Monday, 21 October 2019. No exceptions will be made.

 

11.     What processes have been put in place to safeguard the integrity of this election?

The results of the election will be independently audited before any announcements are made.

 

12.     When will the results of the election be announced?

The results of the election will be announced on Thursday, 31 October 2019.
