Research Sub-theme

Bovine Tuberculosis

As wildlife reservoirs of bovine tuberculosis, African buffalo play crucial role in the epidemiology of this disease in other wildlife species, including endangered species such as wild dog and black rhino.  The administration of an effective bovine tuberculosis vaccine to African buffalo could reduce infection rates and shedding in areas such as Kruger National Park. Thus add significantly to conservation of co-habiting endangered species.

Research Projects

Vaccination of African buffalo against Bovine Tuberculosis (PhD project)
This vaccine trial will describe and compare the protective effects of BCG and a heat inactivated bovine tuberculosis vaccine after an infection challenge in recently weaned disease free buffalo.
