Research Sub-theme

Physiology, biomechanics and biochemistry of wild animals

This work uses both inductive and deductive approaches to scientific research, spread across the fields of physiology, biomechanics and biochemistry.  The overall aim is to uncover new knowledge and understanding on the evolution of animal form, function, and interaction with the environment.

Research Projects

Energetics:

  • research on the metabolic energy expenditure, external mechanical work, and metabolic-mechanical efficiency of animals

Cardiovascular design:

  • analyses on the form and function of the heart and vasculature across phylogeny and ontogeny

Thermal energy and body temperature:

  • research on the physiological, behavioral and environmental factors that determine the operative temperature of animals
