Yesterday at the national championships at Tuks the 23-year old won the women’s hammer throw for women with a distance of 58.97m. Her performance ranks her fourth on South Africa’s all-time list.

The South African champion, Akani Simbine, spoiled fans over the last two years with his speedy exploits on home soil so some might have been slightly surprised by his winning time of 10.05s in the 100m during last night’s Liquid Telecom Athletics Grand Prix-meeting at Tuks.

The South African 400m-hurdles champion, Wenda Nel proved last night during the Liquid Telecom Athletics Grand Prix-meeting at Tuks that she was a quick learner when she raced to a winning time of 55.31s.

On 7 February 1983 in Bloemfontein Ilze Wicksell won the 1000 metres to set a new South African record by winning in a time of 2:37.2 This record still stands 35 years later.
