Dario Schoulund

The author studied Architecture at the National University of Córdoba in Argentina graduating in 2003. He later embarked in post-graduate studies in Urban Design at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 2011. He joined the University of Pretoria on a full-time basis in 2018. On the practice side of design, Darío worked as architect both in Argentina and South Africa, with a brief spell of work in the United States during 2009. Most of this work was on the retail and low-to-medium density residential segments. A keen interest in public space and structural design resulted in him focusing almost exclusively on urban design projects from 2011. He currently lectures Architectural Design at third year level and Structural Design at first year level. His research interests derives from Urban Design practice experience. Public space, as a contested arena, and its impact on the built environment is at the centre of his research arguments.

Boukunde Public Lecture Series

The lecture series explores the possibility that architecture, urban design and urbanism is not only a technical project but also an imaginative and cultural project. The cultural project of shaping a ‘new’ South African urban culture asks that imaginative and urban understanding and tools are extended to new programmatic and contextual themes, challenges and possibilities. This includes speaking to architectural questions of hybridity and diverse publics and spaces, as well to larger questions of urbanisation, the roles of human settlements, social tensions and conflict, and new kinds of collectivities and communities. In this series, architecture is explored as the making of a diverse piece of a city, socially and architecturally.
