The professional masters degree is a one-year, full-time, studio-based coursework programme and is preceded by a one-year professional honours degree. Combined, these qualifications are the equivalent of the two-year professional master’s degree offered by other institutions. The coursework Masters in Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Interior Architecture (Professional) programme is a personal, yet critical, design-led research-based investigation of real-world design problems situated in a local, socio-cultural and environmental context.
The course prepares graduates for advanced and specialised professional employment through recognition of candidacy with registering bodies such as the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP), The South African Council for the Landscape Architectural Profession (SACLAP) and the recognition as candidate interior architect under the SAQA Qualifications Framework. The course is also a gateway to further post-professional design or research specialisations locally and internationally.
The Masters programme aims to promote critical, independent thinking whilst acknowledging the role of the architectural practitioner as a designer, activist, professional specialist and researcher who plays an active role in the general architecture discourse and critical inquiries confronting a rapidly changing society and the world in the twenty-first century.
