Selection Criteria

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are not guaranteed admission to the Department. The Department uses an extensive process of selection in order to identify the strongest prospective students. The selection process is in keeping with the nature of the architectural disciplines and the Department’s approach to spatial design education. Apart from academic merit, an applicant’s interests, skills, experience and opinions are also considered. These aspects are considered cumulatively and collectively in two phases:

Phase 1: Questionnaire and Essay

Phase 2: Tests and Interviews

Applicants who meet the requirements for admission are invited to participate in selection by completing a biographical questionnaire and an academic writing assignment which the Department distributes after the closing date. The first phase of selection is based on a collective assessment of these two submissions, as well as each applicant’s academic record. A shortlist is subsequently published of those prospective students who will be invited to participate in the second round. Candidates whose names have made the shortlist are invited to attend the final selection tests and interviews on the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus. Applicants who are shortlisted must attend their interview and/or test; those unable to do so cannot be considered for selection.second round.

NB: Applications for admission to the professional postgraduate programmes close on 30 September of the year preceding intended study.

NB: Prospective students are advised to ensure that they provide a reliable cellphone number and working e-mail address on their applications. The contact details provided by applicants will be used to inform applicants of the selection procedure and schedule.
