Portuguese helped me to find a great Job that I am passionate about

by Daniela De Sousa

I started my journey at the University of Pretoria in 2018. As a student just out of school, I had no idea about what I really wanted to do. I applied for a BA Languages as I had always had an interest in languages. Having been brought up in a Portuguese family, I chose Portuguese as the major for my degree. Throughout my degree I had many doubts of where I would end up and what I would do after graduation. Although I struggled with doubt, I knew that I was in the right place. I enjoyed every lecture and every day that brought me closer to my graduation. I soon realised how much I loved the Portuguese language and that this was exactly where I was meant to be. I was chosen as the Portuguese tutor in my last year of study. The next year I was asked to join the Portuguese department as a part time lecturer. Once I graduated, I applied for a job at Instituto Camões, an organisation run by the Portuguese education department in various countries throughout the world. My University of Pretoria BA Languages degree was recognised by the University of Lisbon, allowing me to apply for the job. Ever since, I have never turned back. Teaching the beautiful Portuguese language is my passion and I am so grateful to have ended up where I am today!

There’s a quote that goes, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life!”.
