UP professor first to visit a faculty at Dalhousie University

15 April 2014

Prof De Jongh was invited by Prof Peggy Cunningham, Dean of Faculty of Management, to teach and spend time with faculty staff and students. What makes this visit even more remarkable is that Prof De Jongh and Prof Cunningham are both founding members of the Global Responsible Initiative (GRI), launcehd in 2004. The purpose of Prof De Jongh’s visit was to share his experience and knowledge on the broader field of responsible leadership with students and staff and also to explore research opportunities and other forms of collaboration between Dalhousie University and the University of Pretoria.

During his stay, Prof De Jongh lectured to the first-, second-, third- and fourth-year students as well as the MBA students on a variety of responsible leadership topics, such as the conceptual study on responsible leadership, business and biodiversity within the mining sector in South Africa, and integrated reporting and corporate governance. He also gave public lectures sessions which formed part of the Mackay lecture series.

According to Prof De Jongh, the visit offered an opportunity to explore staff exchange programmes where some of the ALCRL academic staff can spend time at Dalhousie and vice versa. Negotiations for an exchange programme, where a postdoctoral student from Dalhousie University who completed a PhD on ecosystem management will spent two years at the ALCRL, are currently in the pipeline. His area of specialisation will offer expertise on biodiversity and integrated reporting research areas.

“It was a valuable trip and we will definitely explore collaboration opportunities emanating from this visit,” Prof De Jongh concluded.
