TuksAlumni Business Breakfast with Justice Johann van der Westhuizen

Posted on June 17, 2016

On Friday, 3 June 2016, the annual TuksAlumni Business Breakfast was held at the University of Pretoria (UP) Conference Centre on the Hatfield Campus. The guest speaker was former Constitutional Court judge, Justice Johann van der Westhuizen, who has been advising UP in recent weeks on matters surrounding transformation and language policy. Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, advisor to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UP, welcomed the guests to the breakfast and introduced the guest speaker.

The theme of Justice Van der Westhuizen's talk was 'Quo vadis, constitutional democracy? The role of courts and Chapter 9 institutions'. During his speech, he joked that he was used to being around hardened criminals who often needed to be surrounded by armed police escorts in order to protect the public, but that that was easy compared to dealing with the issues facing Universities today. After the talk, guests had the opportunity to ask questions.

Dean of the Faculty of Law at UP, Prof Andre Boraine was also in attendance and said that the discussion was highly informative, appealed to an audience from diverse professional backgrounds, and came at a time when many aspects of our young democracy are subject to scrutiny. Justice Van der Westhuizen addressed the issues from the point of view of the judiciary and also referred to particular constitutional cases. He emphasised the importance of a constitutional democracy for the future of our country.
