The African Centre for the Study of the United States, University of Pretoria (ACSUS-UP) invites you to a Public Lecture by Dr April Brown, PhD, LPC, CPCS, NCC who is visiting Africa for the first time:
Theme: The Black Experience in America: A Tapestry of Triumph and Struggle
This presentation explores the Black experience in America from a societal and community perspective. The Black experience is a complex narrative woven from threads of triumph and struggle. As descendants of Africans forced into slavery, African Americans have a rich heritage marked by resistance, cultural innovation, and a relentless pursuit of equality. On one hand, African Americans have excelled in every field imaginable, from music and literature to science and sports. Their creative spirit and perseverance are undeniable. However, the shadows of slavery and segregation linger as part of structural racism in America today. Indeed, despite significant progress, African Americans still feel the weight of history. Systemic barriers lead to health, education, housing, and criminal justice disparities. In addition, subtle forms of racism, such as microaggressions can be a daily reality for many. The good news is that despite these challenges, Black communities pulsate with life. Churches serve as social anchors, and families nurture strong bonds. Black joy, expressed through music, fashion, and language, is a defiant celebration of resilience. Understanding this experience is crucial for South Africans since our nations share a history of racial oppression. By acknowledging these shared experiences, we can foster solidarity and learn from one another's triumphs and struggles in the ongoing pursuit of racial justice and cohesion globally.
