COVID-19 disrupted student learning among university students as classroom moved online, which impacted the lives of student in ways we still trying to understand. In the wake of the pandemic, in the United States we see students who are far less engaged, who do not attend class, and who lack motivation to learn when they are in the classroom. We tend to blame the pandemic for causing students to be unprepared for university because of the trauma that disrupted their high school learning experiences. Further we see our students struggling with mental health issues because of the isolating experiences of the pandemic. So how do address this lack of student engagement? In this talk, I suggest we move away from the idea that our students are lacking, and instead move towards viewing students as “digitally evolved knowledge workers.” What causes the lack of student engagement has much to do with our current curricula and pedagogies are not relevant to this generation of post COVID students. I explore the variety of ways in which student engagement techniques that have been used can be adapted to reach students as digitally evolved knowledge workers.
