#TuksAthletics: Tuks sprinters dominate in the 100m in Paarl

Posted on March 23, 2018

The Tuks sprinters dominated last night during the Liquid Telecom Athletix Grand Prix Series Meeting in Paarl winning both the men’s and women’s 100 metres.

Akani Simbine running into a slight headwind won in 10.08s.

“I stumbled a bit in the last 20m, but I am 96% happy with my run. There are still some small things to work on, but I am happy where I am, especially after having missed out on defending my South African title.”

Simbine had to withdraw from the semi-finals at the national championships, after cramping in his hamstring, so this race was vital to him as his final preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

Carina Horn won her race in 11.25s. Earlier this week she was worried how her body would have recovered from her record-breaking race at the national championships where she had run 11.03s in the semi-finals. In the final she clocked 11.08s.

It is exciting to see that Cornel Fredericks is starting to regain the form that led to him being one of the foremost 400m-hurdlers in the world in 2014. Last night he won in 49.68s.

As has become the norm in local athletics the race turned out to be an all Tuks affair. Le Roux Hamman was second in 49.92s and LJ van Zyl third in 50.44. The current South African champion, Lindsay Hanekom (Tuks) finished 5th in 51.06s.

Ruan de Vries was second in the 110m-hurdles running 13.92s. Antonio Alkana won in 13.39s.
