Posted on September 21, 2015

The University of Pretoria is currently hosting all 8 of the competing teams for a bumper weekend of the Varsity Netball competition.

Sunday, 19 September 2015, started with Maties taking on UJ. The Maties side claimed an impressive 72 – 32 win over the Johannesburg side to put them third on the log at the end of the proceedings. Suné Classens was player of the match. The Madibas were also on the bottom end of the scale when they took on Kovsies. The match ended 71 – 31 to the second placed Kovsies side. Hlumisa Sithanga from NMMU put up a good fight to claim player of the match.

The home side was next on the schedule to take on their rivals from Potch. The 1st quarter was fast paced but low scoring, it ended in a 13 all draw. The Tuks women capitalised in their power play to edge ahead of the visiting side just before halftime. The score was 35 – 22 at half time. First year players Geraldine Odendaal and Jasmine Ziegelmeier were in top form. The Potch women put the stripe generation to the test and made them work for the 58 – 51 win. Both teams walk away with a bonus point from this encounter. Tuks’ Geraldine Odendaal was named player of the match after her cracker performance. Tshina Mdau, a senior in the Tuks team, said “we gave our best and showed Pukke the respect they rightfully deserved. We have a lot of room for improvement and to develop more confidence in each other. It is always an awesome match when you play against the best”. TheUniversity of Pretoria will take on Kovsies later today. Kovsies are currently just 1 point behind Tuks who are log leaders.

The last match on Sunday was VUT against UCT. VUT had a slow start and UCT looked promising and set to claim the 3 points. However, VUT were not going to go down without a fight. A couple of turnovers later and some dominating play buy the VUT side saw them take the lead from UCT. Nokwanda Khumalo, player of the match, was a great asset to her side in securing their first win of the tournament to edge them one position ahead of UCT on the log.
