Lecturer in the interior architecture programme

TEACHING

Zakkiya Khan joined the Department of Architecture at the University of Pretoria as a student in 2009. Once she completed her professional master’s degree in 2012, she worked in practice in the fields of retail and hospitality design. Since then, she has become a freelance interior designer and in 2015 began her role as a lecturer at the University of Pretoria. Zakkiya is currently involved in the 1st and 2nd year studios, and lectures 2nd year design theory as well as 3rd year material studies.

RESEARCH

Zakkiya Khan’s research interests lie in exploring the role of the interior designer as a tastemaker. In particular, Zakkiya is interested in the role that tastemaking plays in creating brand identity in retail spaces. This passion arises from her practice experience in retail design and a desire to contribute to discipline-specific theory in the field of interior design.
