Awards and highlights

During 2013 a number of researchers and students in the Water Institute’s Research Cluster received local and international awards

Dr T Murray (Water and Heath Cluster, Faculty of Health Sciences) was awarded a certificate of merit: Gala dinner, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria 16 November 2013 for being awarded the degree PhD (Medical Virology) in September 2013.

An article by Rossler et al. (Rossler, R., Singels, A., Olivier, F.C. and Steyn, J.M. 2013. Water stress effects on growth and yield of sugarcane. Combined Congress 2013, Durban, 21-24 Jan 2013 has won the award for best student paper at the SASTA Conference

The paper by Rossler et al. (above) has also won the D.F. Retief Trophy for the best paper by a young scientist at the Combined congress

A paper of Taylor et al. (Taylor, N.J., Ibraimo, N.A., Steyn J.M., Ghezehei, S., Gush, M.B. & Annandale, JG. 2013). Water use of macadamias. has won the SASHS prize for best oral presentation at the Combined Congress 2013, Durban, 21-24 Jan 2013

A paper by Ibraimo et al. (Ibraimo, N.A., Taylor, N.J.,Steyn, J.M., Ghezehei, S.,Gush, M.B. & Annandale, J.G. 2013. Quantifying water use of pecans. Combined Congress 2013, Durban, 21-24 Jan 2013) has won the SASHS prize for best oral presentation by a Master’s student at the Combined congress.

Prof Fanie van Vuuren and Mr Marco van Dijk received the Best Paper award from the South African Institution of Civil Engineering – Water Engineering Division for their publication on “The discontinuity required at an air valve or vent for effective pipeline de-aeration”.
