Biography As part of Prof van Heerden’s zoonotic bacterial pathogen group in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases, we have researched the wildlife-livestock-human interface. My focus has predominantly been anthrax, but I have also worked on Mycobacterium bovis, brucellosis, and shigella toxin-producing bacteria during my time in the department. Microbiology and molecular diagnostics have added value to my animal sciences background regarding food security and environmental safety research. We have offered diagnostic support and capacity development opportunities to SADC countries to improve disease reporting and diagnostic methods within state laboratory networks. |

Research description My current role is research support, teaching material development, and laboratory capacity development. We are also involved in research to determine pathogen survival in the environment and the role of genetic cues in the pathogenicity of Bacillus anthracis. These studies could have practical applications for pastoralist farmers in Africa, where anthrax plays a significant role in food and economic security concerns. Furthermore, we are also involved in diagnostics for brucellosis and other diseases impacting sustainable livestock production and, ultimately, human health. Our research has always been centered around developing laboratory methods that can be carried out in resource-poor laboratories. Basic research techniques can still produce viable data with which to make decisions on disease identification and control. |
