UP Campus Tours had the privilege of hosting esteemed members of the Brazilian embassy, a cohort whose genuine enthusiasm and engagement allowed our tourist guide, Noelien Wilsnach, to showcase the splendour of the Hatfield campus in its entirety.
Among the notable highlights, the renowned jacaranda tree, originally hailing from Brazil, served as a poignant symbol, illustrating how facets of our campus possess roots that extend far beyond the confines of Pretoria, across the Atlantic to Brazil. Beyond botanical connections, both our cherished amphitheatre and the iconic Musaion exhibit distinct elements of Brazilian architectural influence. Noteworthy is the Musaion's capacity to accommodate over 500 patrons, while the amphitheatre boasts a seating capacity of approximately 3000. These landmarks not only serve as architectural marvels but also as pivotal starting points for countless academic journeys, with the amphitheatre often serving as the focal point for orientation week activities. Situated mere steps away from the Aula, it emerges as a vibrant social hub for our student body.
In a light-hearted exchange, the representatives from the Brazilian embassy jestingly remarked about gifting us with our magnificent jacaranda trees. They were informed about the prevailing myth within Tuks culture, wherein the sight of a jacaranda blossom falling on one's head during exam periods foretells imminent success. This humorous anecdote underscores the deep-rooted cultural significance these trees hold within our university community and the tangible Brazilian links.
