Posted on September 09, 2021

In September South Africans celebrate their cultural heritage with a public holiday. The Department of Historical and Heritage Studies is hosting initiatives and participating in events related to both natural and cultural heritage and tourism.

On 8 September Mr CR Botha, Lecturer in Heritage and Cultural Tourism, and Prof Karen Harris, Head of Department, participated in the international Association for Tourism and Leisure Education and Research (ATLAS) Annual conference with the theme “Tourism 21: Rebuilding Tourism – Continuities and Changes”. Their paper was titled “Bigger, Better Bolder: Post Covid-19 domestic tourism: South Africa as a case study”.

Prof Karen Harris will be the main guest speaker at the Word Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) virtual conference to be held on 15 September 15:30, presenting a paper on “Doubling up Tourism in Times of Trouble: A Covid survival strategy.”

Prof Harris will be part of a presentation to a LeadUP: Alumni Thought Leadership virtual event on Thursday 16 September, 18h00 – 19h00 with the theme “Natural heritage as an agent for social well-being” (Link).

Prof Harris will lastly also be presenting a lecture on “Touring with History: The past in the Present” for the National Department of Tourism lecture series for Tourist Guides in September.

On 22 September, Mr Hannes Engelbrecht, Lecturer in Heritage and Cultural Tourism, in partnership with the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA) will be hosting the fourth annual heritage month seminar/webinar. The focus is on how technology impacts heritage management and tourist engagement with heritage. Speakers representing government organizations, universities, and private enterprise will discuss their experiences.

Lastly, September is also Tourism Month and the University of Pretoria Campus Tours (UPCT) are hosting virtual tours to take you on a journey of discovery through the rich history of UP and its expansion over a century.
