Atlegang Masemola is part of the current Varsity Football squad. He came through the TuksFootball Academy which forms part of the TuksSport High School programme.
As one of the Tuks 'elder statesmen', he shares his thoughts ahead of their clash against UFS Kovsies on Thursday, 15 August.
"Football at the University of the Free State is experiencing its 'golden era'. They have a good squad of players and should be seen as one of the 'bigger' teams of the tournament. They have a hunger to be the best. So tomorrow is not going to be an easy game. Those are the games you want to play. A top-of-the-table clash. So, we're excited to play in Bloemfontein and showcase what we can do."
As to last week's game against North-West, which ended in a goalless draw, Masemola said, " I think we needed to be more patient. Keep recycling the ball and wait for the right moment to penetrate."
He debuted for Tuks in 2022. From a playing perspective, this season has been frustrating.
"I have been sidelined for six months due to an injury, but I was not going to miss out on playing Varsity football, so I was very diligent with my rehab. So, yeah, I am back and playing for about two months. I'm feeling good physically and mentally. I'm playing less now due to my lack of 'rhythm', but, you know, the team comes first.
"All that matters is to be part of the team and make a difference. Whether that's on the field playing or motivating my teammates before the game or off the pitch. I will do anything to make sure the boys are ready. I want to give them the same support I get when I play."
As to his best traits when playing, Masemola said, "I think I'll bring a lot of calmness. I'm one of the most comfortable players on the ball. My strong points are keeping position and recycling the ball.
"Now, thinking of it, if I should come on to play in a situation where we as a team are with our backs against the wall, I will use my experience from 2022 to slow the game down and maintain the position of the ball to make sure the game is heading in our direction," explained Masemola who is doing is BA in Humanities.
