Posted on August 11, 2022

Elzana Joubert joined TuksSport High School 20 years ago. She is a Mathematics teacher and forms part of the School Assessment Team at TuksSport High School.

Here, Mrs Joubert tells us more about what Women's Month means to her, the importance of celebrating International Mathematics Day and shares her advice to the upcoming generation of learner-athletes at TuksSport High School.

1. Who is Elzana Joubert?

I am a wife and mom to a family I absolutely adore and love to spend time with. I have also been a Mathematics teacher for the past 20 years at TuksSport High School.

2. What does Women's Month mean to you?

Chocolates and flowers!! On a more serious note, it is a month when we are reminded of gender inequality and gender-based violence. A worldwide challenge that we should pay attention to more than once a month a year. It is also a month where all women should be celebrated.

3. For the last year 20 years, you have seen young learner-athletes coming through TuksSport High School to make it on the international stage, what makes TuksSport High School unique?

The like-mindedness of the learners in our school in chasing their dreams and seeing so many of them succeed, not only in sport but also on a professional level. The environment that the school creates makes it possible for learners to achieve the goals they set for themselves.

4. What has been your overall experience at TuksSport High School?

Starting at the school 20 years ago with Mrs de Villiers, and seeing the changes we went through to reach the place where we are currently, has been an absolutely amazing journey. I have been blessed with wonderful colleagues and the best principal any school could wish for.  It has been wonderful to watch the learners flourish in their particular sports codes and on the academic front.

5. You teach Mathematics, what is the importance of celebrating International Mathematics Day?

Mathematics is a universal subject with its own language that is taught the same all over the world. We need to encourage students around the world to sharpen their skills as Mathematics also plays a huge role in problem-solving, a tool that can be used in everyday life.

6. Who are the athletes that you taught and can recall? Name a few

I can recall almost every student I have ever taught. It is almost impossible to select only a few such as Dumisani Masilela, George Maluleka, Tatjana Schoenmaker, Michaela Whitebooi, Rialize Jansen van Rensburg, Danii Nolte, Benjamin Richardson, Apple Gule, Kaylin Swart, Dylan Naidoo, Sammy Ngoveni, Robyn Moodaly, Suzaan van Biljon. I can go on and on.

7. What is your advice to the upcoming generation of learner-athletes at TuksSport High School?

If you want to be something, be kind. If you want to conquer something, conquer your fears. If you want to beat something, beat your best.  Hard work never fails. Setting goals, being passionate about your dreams and achieving them all is possible at TuksSport High School.
