The academy provides a place for young female student leaders to connect and build mutually beneficial relationships. Students, facilitators and management are encouraged to mentor one another and share opportunities for growth. It is intended that guest speakers, workshop coordinators and affiliates to the academy will further build into this network that will ensure sustainable leadership development.

2016 Events

Leading in Education: Sally Curren

The first official event of the year, Leading in Education, an address by Sally Curren, set off the Academy to an excellent start. Curren, an independent education and development consultant, showed the vital role of leaders in the field of education.

Gender-Based Violence Workshop: POWA

People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), presented three extremely popular workshops on gender-based violence. These interactive sessions explored women’s rights, rape culture, LGBTIQ issues, violence in our society, and many more pertinent issues.

Public Speaking Workshop: Professor Rinelle Evans

Professor Rinelle Evans, and expert in education and communication skills, gave a hands-on approach to public speaking and presenting. The women in the academy were then able to practice their newly acquired skills by presenting a 2-minute speech to their facilitators at the next content session

Women in Business: Prof Carolina Koornhof

Prof Koornhof, decorated academic and celebrated business mind, addressed the challenges facing young women in the working world and provided innovative, practical strategies on how to overcome them.

Graduation: Tumi Makgabo

The 250 graduates of 2016 gathered in TuksMonate for an elegant evening of celebration. International TV journalist and global leader Tumi Makgabo, addressed stunned the eager crowd with her rousing address. She inspired the graduates to believe in themselves, step out of their comfort zones, and “dare to do it”. They were also reminded about the value of service and to pull others up through the glass ceilings that they would inevitably break through.

2016 TRWLA Graduates

A special award was given to the TRWLA graphic designer, Jessica Palmer, for her service to the academy. In an exciting announcement Melissa Koch was announced as the new director of the TuksRes Women in Leadership Academy.
