RAG OF HOPE DAY SPORT GOAL BALL

Posted on February 25, 2023

Goal ball is a team sport designed for athletes who are visually impaired.
The game needs spectators to be as silent as possible for those who are visually impaired to
hear the bells in the ball and also to detect where the ball is to accommodate those who are
not visually impaired who want to participate for RAG of Hope Day, there will be a use of
blindfolds. The objective of the game like any other is to score the most goals which means that
a chance at winning is dependent on the number of goals a team has scored.

The University of Pretoria goal ball team has been practicing their defence. They play with a blue ball. It’s the size of a basketball and twice as heavy. The player on offense winds up and then rolls it down the court as hard as they can, like a bowler. The defenders fling their bodies in front of the ball to stop it.

"Goal ball, a sport played at the Paralympics is designed specifically for blind athletes and creates a platform for students with disabilities to experience sports in a safe environment. All the students have visual impairment to some degree, however that's not stopping them from taking part in sports or go even as far as becoming athletes.” said the Chairperson of BOLD 2023.

Tuks SSC is expanding opportunities for Students with disabilities, helping turn the visually impaired into athletes.
