Welcome back!

Posted on July 23, 2019

Welcome back to the new semester! 2019 Semester 1 has been quite a blast, from the innovative 1nSync that saw a society perform for the first time, to the 100% free access StepItUp that saw the Amphi theatre filled up to it absolute capacity with spectacular performances. The students have helped Student Culture (STUKU) step up its game to continue doing the amazing. Student Culture even made an appearance at the SRC fundraising auction. The General Committee was running collecting bids and assisting with ticketing while STUKU’s SRC representative, Thabang Sepuru, was backstage coordinating performances and telling anyone who would listen, “it is Student Culture’s job to give students a platform and share their incredible talents”. Even the chairperson, Varushka Moodely, made a appearance, being auctioned for a shocking R1500.00, the highest bid for the night. All proceeds from the auction will be used to assist students in need with food, accommodation and other issues.

The second semester also promises to be as exciting. The most anticipated event of the year will be upon us in a few weeks. STUKU’s singing competition, UP A Capella, will be happening from the 5 th – 8 th August, the 8 th beings finals night. The competition, organised by Zak Potgieter, consists of around 20 members from various student structures who sing in an a capella style, popular songs from South Africa and the world in line with their theme.

STUKU Executive Committee applications are OPEN!! A chance to be a part of the magic behind student culture is here. Applications can be collected in the Roosmaryn reception and are to be submitted in the Student Culture office (Roosmaryn 2-26) on or before 31 July 2019. Not only do you get a chance to organise events that change people’s lives, but you also learn valuable leadership skills that will help you in your professional life and life in general.

Finally, House Week! The first two weeks of the second semester are known for a lot of simple and outrageous house events for various structures. This first week we have seen scavenger hunts on campus, people dressed bizarrely in class, random singing and flash mobs. It has been a mission for the STUKU team to come together and judge all these many events but it has been apleasure to attend each and every
one.

Keep the fire of Student Culture burning.
