STEP IT UP

StepItUP is one of the events that Student Culture hosts each year. It is a sing and dance competition with the occasional dialogue and promotes diversity and multiculturalism in theme and music. Like 1nsync, StepItUP focuses on promoting togetherness in the student body at the university by not marginalising students who wish to participate in the competition. Provisions are made for students in all day houses, residences and faculty houses at the univeristy to participate in the competition.

Unlike 1nsync, participation is not exclusive to first-year students but is open to all students at the university. Structures compete against each other and at the end of the night, the best performance for each category (men, ladies and mixed-gender group) will be crowned the champions.

In 2022 we have decided to give Step It Up a Twist, We will be having three nights of STEP IT UP. the first two nights will be knockout stages and the finals will be on 14 May 2022 .Tickets for the 14th May Step It Up Finals are availible on Tixsa at R100- Aula and R120- Amphitheatre.

SING IT ACAPELLA

Sing It  Acapella is an annual music competition that focuses on acapella music and the incorporation of non-electrical instruments hosted for UP residences, day houses and faculty houses.  The main purpose of the event is to highlight the multiculturalism of the University and the musical talent the students have to present, and this is a great form of exposure for many students as it affords them the opportunity to participate in a cultural event of a high standard.

Sing It  Acapella consists of a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 20. The groups are expected to perform in acapella style (non-electrical instruments are allowed) for a maximum of 17 minutes performing songs (preferably popular songs) from South Africa and the world.

This event takes place in August 2022 in the Musaion and Aula theatres at the university.

In 2022 Stuku had three nights of Sing It Acapella, the first two nights were the Sing offs where Structures performed for a spot in the top 8. The top perfomred in the Finals.

Annually, Tuks Residence holds culture awards for residences and Student Culture's involvement in the residence’s culture events will play a role in the awards given out through the judging done at the events. Cultural events include residence socials, residence pageants and any other traditional culture events held annually at residences. Student Culture ensures that all culture events internally and externally are executed to the University’s standards and code of conduct.
